comparing final fantasy to my usual RPG fare is interesting. FFX really really takes its time establishing its story, world and characters. im over four hours in and ive spent most of that walking forward and watching cutscenes. i can count the amount of fights on one hand, none of which have been a challenge.
Tidus does work as an audience surrogate but it's a far cry from a typical western RPG. im used to making an avatar and jumping head-first into a game, learning everything at my own pace. it's why i keep coming back to the likes of say, elder scrolls. i like to be a part of a game's world rather than watching it unfold. selfish i suppose lmao.
this isn't a negative of course. i understand the appeal that FF is going for and im definitely more invested than expected. i just cant help having grown up only playing games that do the opposite.
alot of this newfound interest came from playing the yakuza games. they're quite similar (in presentation and pacing, not gameplay) and yet i managed to binge THREE of them. if i can jump a hurdle for that, i can surely do it here.
